What type of training does a Staff Minister receive?

Martin Luther College, the WELS worker training institution in New Ulm, MN, offers three programs to train staff ministers:
  • a four year program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree, with certification in staff ministry
  • a five year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education, with certification in staff ministry and elementary education
  • a five year program leading to a Bachelor Science degree, with certification in staff ministry and parish music.
In addition, there is a staff ministry certification program available to second-career students who already have an undergraduate degree or are older than 35.

For all candidates, a theological foundation in surveys of the Old and New Testaments, Christian doctrine and Confessional Writings is required. Staff ministry specific training is provided in youth and family ministry, evangelism and assimilation, congregational administration, Christian counseling, visitation, Christian leadership, music and worship, Bible study and teaching basics, the theology of ministry. The program is completed with an internship where classroom discussions can be put into practice.

The courses are offered on the campus of Martin Luther College during the regular academic year as well as during summer sessions. Some of the courses are available on-line and can be completed from afar.

There are no gender based differences in training; however, distinctions based on God’s Word are followed by the calling body as they establish the responsibilities of the specific call. The goal is to provide academic integrity, professional competence, and program flexibility in order to best serve the needs of our congregations and of the prospective staff ministers.
